Who is the Best Candidate for Breast Implants?

When you think of the ideal candidate for breast implants you might think of a timid and mousy woman who is not happy with her body image. But that is not the person that really should get breast implants. The ideal candidate for breast implants is the woman who is basically happy with her body, but wants to improve on her appearance. She does not have unrealistic expectations about what the implants will do for her life. A woman with a poorer image of herself might raise her expectations for the results of the breast implants.

The bottom line is that breast implants will not change your life. It is not wise for a woman to pin her hopes on breast implant surgery. She must first find out the true reason for her poor self-image. Small breasts are usually not enough to create such a low self-esteem in a person. It is probably the result of many years of self-doubt and a lack of positive support in her life. Breast implants will not provide this woman with the support system she truly needs in her life.

On the other hand the woman with a positive self-image most likely has a great support system in her life. She has people around her that encourage her and provide all the support she needs. A breast implant surgery can be a very positive experience for this woman. She simply wants to improve on her appearance. Most likely she will not feel as though she is inadequate if she does not receive the surgery. The surgery is an opportunity to feel even better about herself.

It is important that doctors recognize this difference in the patients that come to see them. Too little time is spent on discussing the reasons a woman might have for breast implant surgery. Perhaps it would be wise for a doctor to spend some time discussing the psychology of body image before a breast implant surgery is scheduled. While breast implant surgery can enhance a woman’s appearance and give her increased self-confidence it cannot be the sole reason a woman feels good about herself.

Another issue that doctor’s should be on the lookout for is a woman who is never satisfied with her appearance. She might be the type who obsessively diets or has other cosmetic surgery to correct tiny imperfections that no one but her ever notices. The bottom line is that doctors need to be more aware of the psychological issues their patients face. Ask how many other cosmetic surgeries a woman has undergone before the breast implant surgery or ask if there are other things that she might want to correct. It will give a clear indication of the woman’s state of mind about having this surgery.
